By all means you should definitely ask your dr. for one.
Hi Melissa- 7-8 weeks is definitely not too early- it's good to get in there and see the heartbeat. I know a lot of women also get them earlier, when all you can see is a yolk sac, but for me, it was better the second time to wait til I knew i would/should see a heartbeat. With my first baby, whom we lost at 10 weeks, I had the u/s early one, and we couldn't really see anything anyway. It just added more stress for me. When I got pregnant the second time, I decided that having the early "check to see if it's in the uterus" one was going to feel too similar to the last time, know what I mean? So I refused to get it. My OB was kind of annoyed, but whatever.
Also, as to your question about the safety of u/s, I think the western medical community believes them to be completely safe. However, my doula and acupuncturist both think the fewer u/s the better, especially in the 1T. I am somewhere in between, I guess! My friend who lives in London had two u/s her entire pregnancy- at 12w and 20w. She is amazed that I've already had 5-6!
Take care,
leslie

Melissa,
I think that if you feel a ultra sound would help calm you down then I really think that you should call and ask your doctor for one. I have had an ultra sound every week so far with this pregnancy and I see a High Risk doctor. I asked him if he thinks that too many ultra sounds would be harmful and he said NO, but I also have been having very high blood pressure when I go to the doctors, but every time I see my little squirt is doing fine then my BP comes back down. So he says the stress is way worse on squirt then my 2 minute ultra sound.
Keep us updated!!
Hugs,
Jenn
Melissa,
ASK the doctors for an u/s to ease your mind.
Hi Melissa-
No, that is not too early.
