First Trimester Ultrasound?

So I'm scheduled for an US on this coming Friday? I know the main purpose is to find out an edd since I hadn't had AF yet post m/c on 12/21/06. But what are they all looking for? And when can they see the hb? What is a NT scan? My best guess is that I'm 5-6 weeks pg, and I don't know what to expect and don't want to panic if they can't find a hb.
I'm terrified and excited. My DH has to work so my BF, who has had 2 m/c, is coming along. She totally gets my panicing and insaness since she's been there!
Thanks,
Davida

Hi Davida, I had an us at 5w5d weeks because, I, too, was unsure of my dates. I saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac and the tech said it looked good. I went back this week at 6w6d and we saw a little blob and the little flutter of the heartbeat.

I'd expect you to see what I saw at my first us, if not more since AF came the day before mine did - so you may be as far along as I am!

Best wishes to you for a great us! Keep us posted!

Davida:

I am very glad that you have a support person going with you because those u/s can be scary for us PALS ((((((Hugs)))))). Although scary, the u/s are great because you get reasurance and can watch your little one grow. I cain't wait to hear your update!!

I don't know what they will see between 5 - 6 weeks because my first u/s was between 6 - 7 weeks. They can sometimes see a heartbeat at 6 weeks and can definitly see it by 7 weeks. I first saw my little ones heartbeat after 7 weeks.

The NT scan is an u/s wherein they measure the back of the baby's neck to assess the baby's risk for down's syndrome and other genetic issues. It is usually done between 11 - 13 weeks. Tara posted some information about the NT scan on this board a while ago. Here is the link. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-ppaftermisc&msg=54086.1&ctx=2048

Update us about the u/s results as soon as you can.
