Bad NT test results

Well I just got a call from my doctor with my results from my Nt scan and bloodwork tests. My chances for a baby with downs syndrome are 1 in 249 which he said was alot highter than he had expected. I am totally stunned. I have an appointment to see him again on Thursday to discuss what to do from here. He said we can do an amnio or another test that takes a small sample of the placenta and see what happens from there. But I am scared because I know that amnio has a risk of miscarriage. Oh I don't know what to do, I was not expecting this, I'm only bloody 29!!!
And if we do the amnio and it says the baby has downs what then?? But at the same time I don't think I could go through the next 6 months worrying because I don't know one way or the other.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, anyone who had bad test results how did you decide what to do??

Hi Emma,
I'm so sorry for your bad NT results. I really hope everything turns out well.
I wouldn't worry too much yet if I were you - just to keep it all in perspective, a 1/249 chance is equivalent to 0.4%...that is LESS than one half of one percent. There is a 99.6% chance that your baby is perfectly fine.
Big hugs, and stay strong until you meet with the doctor and do more tests!
Hugs,
Amanda

Emma,

I am so sorry that you are going through all this and I will keep in you in my prayers. I can not tell you what to do as I have not been in this situation, but ask your doctor about a Level II ultra sound. I know that many of women go this route and it of course is a lot less high risk as Amino.

Hi Emma,
I don't have knowledge of the NT results--I am 34 and was not offered it. However, I am in the same boat as you for the risk of Downs. Our Triple Screen at 16 weeks came back with a slightly elevated risk of Downs for my age. I went on to have a Level II U/S which also showed 1 subtle marker on the heart--from what I understand, the marker found is at the bottom of the list.
We decided against Amnio for a vareity of reasons--even though our risk factor is now at 1:100. We are looking at the bright side that we have a 99% chance of having a healthy little boy.
Please believe me when I say we have been living this worry and decision now for about 4 weeks--but my OB doesn't seem concerned at all.
If you would like to pick my brain or chat more --feel free to email me at lbonjo@hotmail.com. Hang in there!!!
Love,
Lori

Hi, I dont have any experience, just wanted to give some support with your difficult decision. As another poster noted that is still less than a 1% chance. keep us posted... you are in my thoughts..

So sorry for the unsettling news. With last pregnancy we had some uncertain results from an U/S and were going for NT scan. My OB said that with all the new more advanced testing that we are seeing things much earlier than we used to and sometimes we don't know what we are seeing. There are high rates of false positives. I asked her when they will do a study about how all the stress and worry over false positives negatively affects a pregnancy and she agreed, sometimes we just find out too much that ends up meaning nothing.
I know 1 in 249 is a big difference from what you are expecting but it is still just a chance not a definite. When I was in your shoes we were going to go ahead with further testing so that we could terminate if the condition was incopatible with life like trisomy 13 I think or prepare ourselves if we were having a down's baby. After chromosomal testing after the m/c we discovered that all the U/S were wrong and the baby appeared fine, so while we lost the pregnancy the U/S had us terrified over non-issues.
Hang in there and I hope you get some great news and great test results soon.

Thankyou all ladies, I really am trying to keep this all in perspective. I know that a 1 in 249 chance is very low, I just can't believe that I got such a bad result. When I had the ultrasound I was watching the screen and saw the guy taking the NT measurement and they were only 1.7mm so I really thought everything would be ok. But I guess something showed up in the bloodwork or something, I really won't know till I speak to my doc tomorrow.
My dh and I talked about it yesterday and I think we are going to have further testing, simply because we don't want to be worrying about it for the next 6 months. If we got a positive for downs I really don't know what we would do, I would have a very hard time deciding to end a pregnancy because of downs but i feel sure my dh would want to terminate, and we are a family so what he thinks counts as much as what I think in these things as far as I am concerned.
Well I will keep you all posted and let you know what happens with the doc tomorrow.
Thank you all for your support.
Emma
edited to add: At the NT ultrasound the tech had a trainee with him so was talking alot and he also said there was a definite nasal bone as well, so now I'm wondering what exactly gave me the bad results??
