Transvaginal u/s

My first appt is next week when i'll be in my 6th week. i'm not sure if we'll get to see/hear the heartbeat at this appt, but i was going to try request it as i'm of course paranoid. but at this early stage, is it done transvaginally? my mom keeps telling me not to do it as it's not safe for the baby and i keep telling her they must know what they're doing over there ;) and also, i'm a little nervous b/c when i last had a transvag u/s it was when i was mc'ing so i'm afraid of the bad memories :(
thanks.

I had an u/s a few days after I was 6 weeks and we saw the heartbeat. My friend went a few days before she was 6 weeks and they didn't see the heartbeat. It starts beating between 5 1/2 & 6 weeks but people don't always know their dates. My doctor reccomended we wait a few days after 6 weeks. Even if they don't see the hb, they will see the sac and fetal poles and probably have you come back. The transvaginal u/s won't hurt the baby. The wand they use just goes right up to the cervix and is not too close to the baby. My first transvaginal u/s was for my first m/c but it was totally different when I went in while pg with my ds. You will be so excited to see your bean and make sure everything is okay.

Don't worry, you're absolutely right and the dr.'s know what they're doing!
It is very safe for you and the baby.
