Well I woke up yesterday with horrible ear pain and what felt like fluid in my ear. Then a sense of dread washed over me and I was terrified about the baby. My m/s has been diminshing and my bbs aren't as sore as the used to be. Since my OB is 2 hours away I went to Urgent Care mainly for the ear.
Yes, I do have an ear infection...who the heck gets an ear infection when they're 27 and in June none the less?! :) Then I mentioned my fear about m/c to the doctor and he said he had a doppler. I told him I was only 10 weeks and 4 days. His reply was, "Oh you can hear the hb at 5 weeks by doppler!" HUH? Is this guy a quack or what? So he gets this doppler from 1975 (the kind with a stethescope attached) and listened for the hb. I was very doubtful. Then he found it....I guess. He let me hear, but I kept asking him how did he know it was the baby's hb, and not mine? He never answered, just told me I was deaf if I couldn't hear it. Nice bedside manner, huh?
Anyway, have any of you ladies ever had one of these old fashioned doppler's used on you? How reliable are they compared to the "new" ones. I have my NT scan and 12 week appt. in 9 days. Ahhhh...9 more days 'till the 2T!
TIA,
Meagan

All I can say that might help is the baby's HB should be way faster than yours. Adult HB's are typically below 100... the baby's should be above 120 and much faster depending on how far along you are. :) HTH... I've never seen a doppler with a stethescope. But 1975 is the year I was born... so that doesn't seem toooooo old to me!!! :)

They are just as reliable as the new digital dopplers, as long as the person using it nows what they are doing. and yes the heart beat can start as soon as 5 weeks so it can be heard very definately by 10weeks. It sounds like the doctor you saw, dispite his manner, knew what he was doing. And just like the previous pp said the babies hb will be over 120 bpm. My DD#1 at 10w was 163bpm. Your HB will be under 100 at resting.
