1st appt not until 10 weeks?

I just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant on Sunday. I don't have my first appointment until July 18th. Should I be talking to my doctor before then? I don't know what caused my first miscarriage and I hate to think its something preventable that my doctor isn't checking for. I feel like calling him up and asking for a weekly blood test or something just so I know that everything is moving forward as it should. Does anyone else's doctor handle a pregnancy after a miscarriage differently?

I got pregnant after my m/c before I even had a natural cycle. So I was a little shocked and scared. I called the doctors to ask for hcg level check and they did it for me. I had two blood draws and everything was great. I had my first appt on june 13th and at the time I was 6w 6d. This appt however was only for all the paperwork, regular blood work, and history of medical. I was told the doctor does not like to see people or do u/s until 10-12 weeks. So my first appt for an u/s and everything isn't until July 9th which then I will be 10w 4d. I hope this helps in some way!

I'm sorry you have to wait until your ten weeks until your first appointment! I'm pretty sure that is the general rule of thumb. I don't have my first official appointment until I'm 10 weeks, but I have already had blood work and I have my first U/S tomorrow at 6 weeks. The only reason I'm getting an U/S so early is because I've had 4 previous losses. I really don't think the doctors want to see you early unless you have had more than 1 m/c and I think that is a little crazy. If it would make you feel better just call and ask for some blood work to check your HCG levels and your progesterone. I'm sure they won't mind doing that. Good Luck!!

This is a total ramble-- beware! hehehehh

I was disappointed when my doc wouldn't check my blood, etc. earlier after my loss. But here's how I approached it: one loss doesn't mean you've got any greater risk than you did before your loss. My doctor's office wouldn't treat me any differently unless I had had multiple losses. My first appointment was at about 9 weeks.

Was it hard to wait? Yes. But there is very little that can be done early on (of course, dependent upon the condition, there are times when early intervention is important... but it is the exception and not the rule.) For me, it was much better not to have extra information to freak out about and obsess over. Usually I'm a "give-me-all-the-information" gal, but, in this case, I wanted my second pregnancy to be treated as normally as possible.

On the other hand, you are the consumer and you should get the service you pay for, which may mean changing doctors. It is also hard to get an appointment with most OBs any closer than a few weeks in advance unless you sneak into a cancellation spot. (At least that's how it is at my doc's.)

My doctor was not the one that saw me through my m/c. We moved immediately afterwards, and then I got pregnant the cycle after my AF. I lost my first at 5w5d, but here I am, heading into week 18 tomorrow, and I can't believe I'm almost half way to d-day.

You need to do what is going to make you feel better. Some told me to fake some cramping and spotting to get in to see someone sooner. I was too superstitious and was sure I would cause something to go wrong if I did that. So I waited. I had my first appt at 9 weeks and my first ultrasound 2 weeks later. I needed to feel normal and not have HCG levels to obsess over, or the chance to see a fetal pole without a heartbeat because it was too early. When I saw the bean, it looked like a baby and it had a strong heartbeat and was moving around and waving at us.

First of all... Congrats on your pregnancy!!

I think it's perfectly fair for you to ask for blood work in this pregnancy after suffering a m/c. Even if you don't see the OB, you can get hcg draws to ease your mind. It certainly doesn't hurt to call and ask!!

My Doc has been very careful after last M/C. I went in for the first blood test at 4 weeks as soon as I called them. Had second blood test 2 days after. Had my Ultrasound at 7 weeks and 5 days and had regular blood work done at 8weeks 3 dayd. With my first Pregnancy, I had first blood work and paperwork done at 5 weeks with nurse as soon as I found I was PG, And didn't see Doc until 12 weeks.

At my doctor's office they do not see people until 8 weeks unless you have some type of problem. Even though I had one miscarriage, the next time I was pregnant they still did not want to see me until 8 weeks. One miscarriage does not increase your odds of having another so you are treated like everyone else.

I would definitely call back and ask if you could see the dr. earlier.
