A lot of the pp mentioned the calcium-fortified OJ, which I am a huge fan of. It's also usually the same price as regular OJ and has as much calcium as milk. Yogurt actually has a ton of calcium in it... sadly, ice cream does not! :(
One thing no one mentioned - I was told NOT to take my prenatal with milk or calcium-fortified drinks, as it can make you not absorb the iron as well. So maybe you want to check with your dr or pharmacist on what the composition of your prenatal is. Some of them are more iron-heavy than others, I think.
If your problem is the lactose, you can also try Lactaid (I think that's what it's called) -- it's real milk, so it's a great source of calcium. I noticed it tastes a little funky, but not as weird as a soy milk or anything, and they have a chocolate kind that's pretty good. I was actually drinking it until pregnancy made me lactose-tolerant (go figure!)
GL!
calcium suppliement and hot chocolate.
Just remember don't take it with prenatal vitamin, Calcium inhibit absorbtion of iron
Jenny,
I was lactose intolerant before I got pg with DD. It went away after she was born. Then it came back during my 2T with DS. It has gone away now, but he still can not tolerate the milk based formula. So, I've been there!
*Try the lactaid. It does taste a bit different. I describe it as being "flat" milk. Like water gets flat after sitting in a cup too long.
*Frozen yogurt is healthier than ice cream and it tastes a lot better than it used to. I can't tell a difference anymore.
*The viactive calcium chews are yummy, but stay away from the multi-vitamin.
*Powdered milk still has lactose in it, so it probably won't be any better :(
*I found that I could have milk as long as it was cooked. I had cook-n-serve pudding quite a bit. Soup was good too.
I hope it goes away when you deliver your baby. Mine always has.
Good luck!

Hi Jenny:
I have been lactose intolerant for years and can not drink regular milk. I have been able to get used to Lactaid milk and now I don't taste a difference (although I did when I first started drinking it.) I can drink chocolate soymilk and can handle soymilk in my cereal but I can't stand to drink soymilk in place of a regular old glass of milk (soymilk and cookies - nah, doesn't cut it!)
You might be able to tolerate goats milk products. I can eat goat cheese with no problem but cows cheese will get me, especially hard cheeses. I can handle most yogurts for whatever reason.
I can't live without icecream so when th family has it, I take those little lactaid pills and am usually ok.
I think Tara's list of things that contain calcium is a good one. I like orange juice but can't drink much of it when pregnant because it always gives me heartburn - but the fortified stuff is great if you can handle it.
Hope this intolerance to milk is just temporary for you. Being lactose intolerant is inconvenient. Many many things contain milk or whey that you wouldn't expect!
Good luck,
