Insomnia

Does anyone have insomnia? I stopped taking my progesterone and thought maybe that's what caused it. Then I thought maybe it was the NW heat we were having. Now that it's cool and we've had ample rain, I still can't sleep.

Last night I tried to sleep at 9 pm, and know I was still up at 11. Then I was awake from abut 1:30 to 5 am. If I do sleep it's not good quailty. When I finally manage to fall asleep, my ds wants to wake up! I'm so tired that I can't get anything done.

Any ideas on how to break this awful cycle?

Alicia-

Sorry that you're having a terrible time sleeping lately. I have had some problems-but not too severe. Luckily for me my DH went through this a few years ago when he was very stressed out about his job. He found 2 tricks that seemed to help him. His first method is to think about nothing but black. Try to get everything out of your mind & just focus on black. If you focus on this hard enough it eventually clears the mind enough to fall asleep. (This one works better for him-not so good for me.) His other advice was to count backwards from 100 by 3s. Some nights I make it through pretty quickly so then start at 500 & go backwards from there. Seems like I never make it all the way to 300 so it must work really well for me. HTH

Hey neighbor!!!

Isn't the rain great!!!

I did actually sleep better the first few nights, but it didn't last & I can already tell it's starting to warm up again. Grrrr. Oh well, I'm driving to SLC tomorrow anyway.

~ First of all, if you're lying awake for more than 20 minutes your supposed to get up & try again later.

~ Do not retire to your bedroom until you are ready to go to sleep. In fact, try to stay out of your bedroom except for sleep through pg & possible until your baby is sleeping somewhat at night.

~ Try to get some exercise in day, but not 4 hours (I think it's 4) before bedtime.

~ This is crazy, but this will zonk me out sometimes; a graham cracker with milk. Turkey & vit. B6 are also supposed to help you sleep.

~ When I quit smoking I used a self-hypnosis CD. I could not stay away through the session a single time. So perhaps you can find a general self-hypnosis CD.

~ I tried a warm bath last night, but I wasn't in there for more than 5 minutes before my ds woke up. He was up from 3-5 last night. But sometimes it helps. (or during these extra hot days they have been cold showers)

~ When all else fails, call your OB, I know there is one drug that can be used in pg. In fact my sister's OB (specialist) said it was originally created for the pg woman, but worked so well it was marketed to all people. I just don't remember which drug it is.

SWEET DREAMS!

Hey Alicia!

I never go to bed before 1am. I try, but I just don't get sleepy until then! I really liked all of the suggestions mentioned in the other posts, and I would try those first, but my doctor said that if I had trouble sleeping I could take 1 Benadryl. Talk to your doctor first though before you try it.

Hope you start getting some sleep soon!

I too have a problem sleeping, I thought one thing then another, but then I read that sometimes that it can happen when you're pg. which sucks for us who can't sleep. I want an 8 hour sleep even if I do get up to pee 3-4 times a night! LOL

One thing that helps me fall asleep is putting a few drops of lavender on a cotton ball. I put it close to my nose on the pillow and just focus on breathing deeply.

Alicia,

How ironic that I am reading your post at 4:23 in the morning. Insomnia gets me too.... about 2-3 times a week these days. I had it early in the pregnancy, then it went away, now it's back again!

My poor DH has had insomnia for years.... one thing he does that hasn't been mentioned is he moves to another bed in the house (only works if you have a guest room). Sometimes it's enough to clear his head so he can sleep the rest of the night. I tried it last week and it worked for me too.

I think I'll go try it in a few minutes, actually.

GL,

Sue

I'm liking all of these suggestions... I can't add any advice cause I've been an insomniac for years... long before I had any pregnancies... the only time I slept good is at the beginning of this pg when I was taking prometrium... I used to tell everyone that "I'm an insomniac who sleeps thru the night" - but those good nights of sleep went a way with the prometrium...

So thanks to this post for all the suggestions, I'm gonna try some!

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I am going to try them. I managed to have a good 3-4 hours of solid sleep last night because I was so physically and emotionally exhausted. I supsect part of my problem is that I love to read in bed before I fall asleep. I'll try staying out of bed until I'm absolutely tired. It's also good to know that I'm not alone. My dh is asleep within 5 minutes of crawling in bed. If only....:)

Bonnie,

I was just outside of Portland last week (on Chehalem Mountain--15 minutes from Washington Square) visiting my parents. I lived in Beaverton and went to Aloha High School so many years ago. I was beginning to think everyone on this board was from the east coast. We used to live in Seattle and moved 20-30 minutes east because I was tired of remodeling our old house and wanted the suburbs for our DS! You have it much worse with the heat than we do. I was grumbling while visiting my parents because it was almost 10 degrees warmer in Portland! On the drive down, we could see the mecury rising.
