I think we can trust our gut feelings. I think that's what influences a lot of what we do. When I was a senior in high school I took a "mass media" class. We focused on TV, advertising, movies, newspaper all those kinds of media. We did the classic movie history stuff but we spent a lot of time on advertising and how companies kind of manipulate that gut feeling in us to buy one thing over another.
I think the gut instinct is what helps us in our daily lives. I will never, ever question mine again after this one situation awhile ago at work. I had a patient whose vitals signs, especially her blood pressure was trending in a very odd way. I was very concerned about it because this trend can indicate increased pressure in her brain. I spoke to my charge nurse and to the surgeon who had performed her surgery earlier that day. I wasn't sure about my findings so I mentioned it but didn't really push the point. I was certian that she was headed for trouble. I documented my findings in her chart and finished up my night. When I came back to work the next day she had been transferred to the intensive care for exactly what I was afraid of... Never again will I fail to listen to, and stand up for those gut feelings!
