Sequential screening results

So today I got the call with the final results of my sequential screen (NT scan + 2 blood draws). I (or I guess, the baby?) am screen negative on all counts! Down's risk is 1/345, spina bifida risk is 1/5000. With Down's results, they only recommend amnio if your risk is 1/250 or greater - so I guess I won't be doing the amnio, since the risk of miscarriage from the procedure is greater than my risk of having a baby with Down's. Plus, I know that I would not terminate the baby even if it did have Down's - I will play the hand that I've been dealt. I would have been happier if my risk was like, 1/10000! But 1/345 is not too shabby for a 36-year-old, and still means I have over 99% chance of this baby being perfectly healthy.

Hi Kerri-Anne,

Cool, that's the same screening I just did (they took my second blood last week at 15 weeks). It's supposed to detect 95% of Down's babies. Yes, that was me that asked. Your NT results sound great so that's a wonderful sign!

Great news, Melissa!!

Good for you!

Since we're so close in EDD - are you going to find out gender?? If so, when is that u/s?

Melissa,

Great news! That's one less thing for you to worry about, right? I hope my results are also so great across the board.

Hey Tiffany,

I had to chuckle when you said I was tiny - at 5'10", 140 lbs. I've never thought of myself that way, LOL! I do see my belly changing shape, but it definitely hasn't popped out yet. Whereas before, it was pretty much a straight line from my ribcage on down (with a little pooch of course), now, things slant outward from my ribs a bit. Some people have told me they didn't pop out until 5 months or so with their first, so I'm waiting for the next month to go by! I do plan on finding out the sex, but I haven't got the appointment scheduled yet. I see my OB next week so maybe then they'll schedule it. How about you?

I'm glad your screening went so well!! And I can't believe you're 36!!! You certainly don't look like you're in your 30's in your photo.

Hi Melissa!

Well, just you wait- I think you've seen my giant belly pic, then at only 14 weeks...and I honestly didn't *really* show w/ DD until 22ish weeks (I thought I did, but no one else could tell).

And, 140 lbs at 5'10" is tiny!!

Yes, we're going to find out the gender if LO cooperates - appointment is scheduled for 6/15- at 18 weeks. I'm a little worried, as I've always thought that they did this appt. at 20 weeks - what if 18 is too early to tell for sure??

Granted, I'm never going to turn down an earlier u/s for a later one:) I'm still convinced it's a boy - will be absolutely shocked (though not disappointed!) and amazed if they say girl!!

It'll be exciting when we all find out...and one more step to feeling reassured (at least for me!) -Tiffany
