I'm a little confused about what to do. The nurse who taught my BF class highly reccomended keeping your baby w/ u overnight while in the hospital so u can attend to her needs and for attachment issues. My mommy-friends, dh, and my mom keep telling me that if

I voted "My room", but it's a moot point because my hospital doesn't have a nursery. They have a NICU, but if your baby is healthy they room with you by default. I think I'd keep the baby with me no matter what, though. When DS was brand new he only woke up to eat anyway, so I don't really know what the point would have been. Either way, you wake up when they're hungry.

Well, at this new hospital, I don't have a choice. We HAVE to room in. I asked if my husband were to go back to work and I were still there, if I could send the baby to the nursery if I wanted to shower or something.. and here's the answer I got-- "If he's fed and changed, and if they nurses aren't too busy, then maybe they would take him for a half our or so."

So, that would be a no... lovely. But they also harped on the fact that after a normal vaginal birth, you can go home after 25 hours, and made it sound like at hour 25, they come in and ask if you're ready yet... heheheh. Might as well, from the sounds of things!! heheheh

Wow... although they weren't as adamant about it, my hospital also basically tells you to room-in. If you have to take a shower and there isn't another adult in the room to watch the baby, they will take him/her for a little bit. But basically the "nursery" is just for babies who have special requirements. When we went for our hospital tour, there were 2 babies in the nursery, and they said that there are usually no more than 2 or 3 there at any given time.

Hi Najah...

I thought I'd keep my baby in the room, but because of the long induction, I had been awake for 36 hours by the time evening rolled around again.

I was in the hospital for 4 days and had Mikey in my room with me most of the time. I had had a rough labour though and my blood pressure was still very high so at one point the nurse came and suggested that I put Mikey in the nursery so I could get some sleep. I am very glad that I did. What the proponents of rooming in fail to recognize is that the mother has just been through the most physically exhausting time of her life, and it is not fair to expect her to leave L&D exhausted and sore and possibly traumatized, and then send her on her way with very little sleep! It is best, I think, to get as much sleep in the hospital as you can, because once you are home, you are SOL if your little one doesn't want to sleep! Even if the baby is put in the nursery for a couple of hours, just be sure to get some unbroken sleep before you go home!

With my son, I kept him in my room all night both nights and got no sleep whatsoever; I woke up at every sound he made so when I got home, I was absolutely exhausted and started our new life with NO sleep which was an awful way to start my motherhood journey.
