I had one at 36 wks since we were moving cross country. One at 37 since I was a new patient. One at 39 because I was anxious and asked for one, and 1 at 40 wks. Doesn't tell you much. I was at 25% effaced at 36 weeks, and not dialated at all at 40 weeks and G was born 30 hours later.
You totally have the right to decline one. I was freaked out about them too although I have only had one it was actually really quick and no big deal (and I was really uncomfortable with the idea prior). Also my doc is of the opinion that they aren't particularly acurate at determining when labour will start anyway - they give an idea but can be misleading. They aren't routine where I live until 41 weeks if you go that far but I think the doctors here are much less interventionist that many other places.
Well, they can't MAKE you take off your pants ;) So I say if you don't want an internal done, don't get one done. There really isn't a medical reason for one- unless of course your situation changes. I think that they are just being nosy... you could be dialated for weeks without going into labor.
I was planning on fighting mine on it until at least 39w- as it turns out the office won't do one until 40w unless you request it. I hope that you are able to get what you want! GL ~Amy
I agree with the PPs. If you don't want it, then don't let them do it. I just had my 36 week appointment yesterday and they didn't do one, nor mentioned doing one any time soon. If you don't like this doctor, then graciously decline getting it done.
I had one at 30 weeks but I was worried that my cervix was thinning out. My OB wouldn't have done one had I not asked. Prior to this, I can't remember having one until 36 weeks.
Don't worry about it too much because chances are you won't even have to broach the subject.

Just do what you are comfortable with.

I had one done at my last appt - 35 wks, but I was almost 36 wks.
My dr does them for the last month too, when you start going every week. I had one earlier, but only b/c of bleeding, not b/c he regularly does them.

34 weeks does seem a little on the early side.
