Plan B: Morning After Pill

Hi everyone

Last night, my boyfriend's condom broke. I am not on the pill. However, we both believe that he ejaculated outside of me or close to it.

He always does, though of course this is the first time the condom has broken.

I immediately panicked and called my gyn, on a Friday night at 8pm! Her service reached her and she promptly called in a prescription of Plan B (the morning after pill) for me. You are supposed to take it within 72 hours, and I literally took it within 2 hours!

Still... I'm very anxious. Although I am 30, I do not want to become pregnant before marriage. I've been anxiously researching Plan B and its effectiveness online and yet I'm still nervous.

Has anyone ever used it? I hate the fact that I'll be nervous and on edge till I get my period (hopefully)... this will be the first time I will welcome my period with open arms!

Any input would be great!

By the way, for what it's worth, I am at day 15 of my cycle (that is, I last got my period on 12/26, a Friday, ended the following Friday, so I began that period two weeks to the day from yesterday. My cycle wavers between 28 and 32 days and always has...) Nice timing, right? Ha!

Thanks

It was so good that you could get Plan B as quickly as you did. You have looked at the EC site http://ec.princeton.edu/ right? The FAOs there are very good in covering the subject. There are a number of posters here who have used Plan B but the board is pretty slow on weekends so it may take a while for them to reply. I hope everything works out for you. Let us know how you are doing, ok?

Hugs

I think you'll be fine. The exact same thing happened to me when I was 18 (right down to the crappy timing :-) , and although it took me closer to 24 hours to work up the nerve to tell my parents that I needed the morning after pill, everything was fine.

I tell ya, it's nearly impossible not to freak out during that first week (after which you can just take a pregnancy test). But between his ejaculating mostly outside of you and taking the pill only two hours afterwards, the odds are very much in your favor.

Best of luck.

I've seen stats, but can't recall them off the top of my head - the site that dancer gave you will probably have something.

I have to had to use Plan B three times...all due to condom breaking. I feel it is very effective and had absolutely no side effects. You may get your period soon after taking it or it may come at the regular time. Also, it could come at both times, depending on whether or not you had ovulated yet. Don't worry, it worked for me!

Hi I was just wondering how much PLAN B costs at a Pharmacy. I know you can get it at PP but I figured that Kristie got it through a Pharmacy. I was also wondering how you felt afterwards, was there any side effects? Also did you use INS. to help cover the cost of the pills?

Thanks

Not that I'm priding myself on this but I have taken Plan B a few times. I even took the other 'morning after pill' once. When this pill first came out in the '60s (I think) it was harsh on the body and made recipients very ill. Now it isn't even noticable except that it will throw your period off or at least it has in my cases.

All that said, it is effective so you are in good hands. The one thing to worry about is STDs since it only covers pregnancy but since it was with your beau and not a one night stand it doesn't seem like you need to worry much. You'll be fine.

The first time I used it I got it at PP for about 30 dollars I think. The other times I got at my college health clinic for 20. I am sure insurance would help cover it though, I just didn't want my parents to see the charge since I get my insurance through them! Also, you might want to consider another form of birth control since condoms DO break. After my third time to take Plan B it hit me that I need another method!

I know you must be anxious to start your period. I know I was when I had to take the morning after pill due to my bf's condom accident. Except ours fell off before he came inside me. The next day I went to the emergency room for the pill. They took pregnancy test to conferm I wasn't pregnant which I wasn't because the pill won't work if you are pregnant. They gave me perscription for morning after pill at the pharmacy. It cost me $28. I was 100% certain it would work. Christmas came around and I didn't start my period. My last period was thanksgiving day. I had terrible breast tenderness. I thought this was a side effect of the pill. 2 weeks after christmas I got scared and decided to take a home pregnancy test and it was positive. I was very upset. I went back to the emergency room for another pregnancy test which was postitive as well and to find out what happened. They told me the morning after pill was not 100% that it would prevent pregnancy. Although there are no reports of birth defects from the morning after pill I was scared that something might happen. So I decided to terminate the pregnancy. And I made the decision that I did not want to get pregnant when I used the condom, and I made the decision that I did not want to get pregnant when I used the morning after pill. I think my decision was right for me. I just hope it works for you.

Hi everyone

Thank you SO much for responding. It seems like this is a major topic!

I am still very nervous, although my boyfriend seems to think it will be ok because it seems that he came outside of me (though I say who can be 100% positive? Could he have come even a drop inside? Possible...) and I took the Plan B pill literally within 2 hours.

Still, though, I am petrified. I have not told my parents. There's nothing to tell at this point and, despite the fact that I am a grown 30 year old woman, it still wouldn't go over well because in our family, this isn't the way it should happen. What kills me though (because of the irony) is that I was a virgin until I met my current boyfriend and didn't have sex with him till we were together for nearly 8 months, because I knew then that we were and are on our way to engagement. And now this possibility! Can you imagine?!

Inftech, so far you're the only one here who said she got pregnant and that Plan B didn't work... were you by any chance pregnant before this particular incident?

Thanks for your support everyone, and I'll keep you posted!

Oh, and I forgot to answer your questions!

Since I just started a new job, I have insurance but don't have my insurance card yet, so I will file a claim this week. Plan B cost $28 at my local pharmacy... well worth it.

As for side effects, I haven't had any at all, although I've been extremely irritable. This may just be nerves or, HOPEFULLY (HA HA!) PMS.
