Hi there!

I'm a lurker here who just got the Para Guard Copper IUD 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to actually start working? My doctor said "wait a few days", but I'm so paranoid! Can any of you tell me how long you waited for it to take effect?

Thanks!

At http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ec/ It says that insertion of a copper IUD can be used as a form of emergency contraception and at http://www.plannedparenthood.org/bc/bcfacts2.html It says:

“Emergency IUD Insertion: Treatment initiated within seven days after unprotected intercourse reduces the risk of pregnancy by more than 99 percent. (No protection against infection.)”

That suggests to me that once an IUD is inserted it should protect against pregnancy immediately. Perhaps your doc. wanted to see if your body would tolerate it before you needed to rely on it.

Good luck

Hi there...

I've also got a copper IUD, its great! It becomes effective as soon as it is placed in your uterus. I think your doctor just told you to hold out for a few days so that your cervix had time to heal up a bit. So, you're good to go! Happy Humping!
