Hi,

I just had a quick question that I was wondering if anybody had info regarding or knew where to find some. I just had a baby, 6 weeks, and have my check-up next week. Of course that is when you discuss birth control options and I have been researching a few. My question has to do with cancer rates and prolonged use of birth control pills. I had been on Orocyclen for almost 5 years before having my 1st son. I was using condoms until my second son. My body know the statics? Other option I am considering is the Mirena IUD, Thanks

Congratulations on your new baby! The risk of cancer from OCs really good question to discuss with you Doc. I think it’s the estrogen that could be a problem. Especially of you have a history of cancer in your family. Otherwise the risk from OCs is quite low. But if you are bf-ing you won’t want a combined pill. If you are breast feeding exclusively then a progestin only mini pill might work for you while you are bf-ing. The Mirena with just a little progestin might be a very good choice.

Good luck
