I was thinking about getting on the depo provera. Is there any medications that

can affect the shot? Also, do any test like having blood drawn affect depo?

Hi Missy,

What I found (there may be more) was the following:

“Aminoglutethimide administered concomitantly with the DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection may significantly depress the serum concentrations of medroxyprogesterone acetate. 12 Users of DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection should be warned of the possibility of decreased efficacy with the use of this or any related drugs.” Depo can also alter the results of some lab tests. It would be a good idea to ask your doc about any interactions.

Depo is a very harsh progestin that can have severe side effects. Mood swings, weight gain and in some women delayed ovulation of 12 – 18 months after stopping the shot. On the other hand, it is very effective and very low maintenance, one injection every 13 weeks, and there are some women on Depo who love it. If you have unpleasant side effects there is nothing to do but let it wear off in 3 months. For more info see http://www.contraceptiononline.org/contrareport/article01.cfm?art=256 Be sure to research Depo thoroughly before you give it a try.

Good luck
