Nervous, please help!

Hello! I was on birth control for 7 months and just went off a little over 2 months ago. Me and my boyfriend have been using condoms with spermicide. The first day of my last period was January 29th. We had sex on February 14th and the condom broke but he pulled out. I should be due for my period sometime this week but I am getting nervous now because even though he pulled out, I am scared what if some got inside of me? I am not real good with figuring out when I ovaluate so I am wondering if by my calculations above, if I was in the danger zone. Also, are condoms with spermacide better against protecting pregnancy then the ones without? Also, is there a chance that the pill might still be in my system since I went off them a short time ago? We had sex this past weekend and my bf said he saw a little blood on the condom. I am hoping that was just because I was a little tight because I know it wasn't my period. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

There is a chance you could be pregnant. Since your partner pulled out, the chances are smaller that you could be pregnant, but there is still a chance.

It's really impossible to know if you were ovulating during the time the condom broke unless you were charting your fertility. Also, it generally takes a few months for women's cycles to regulate after stopping the pill.

Condoms with spermecide are more effective than condoms without, but neither is 100%.

Since you have been off the pill for 2 months, it is very doubtful that you have any protection from pregnancy from your pill use. BCPs work by regulating hormones and you must take the pills according to the schedule to be protected.

So, if your period doesn't come, take a test. If you aren't pregnant, take this as a warning and be more careful in the future.

Hi nchristinzio, welcome back!

A good 2% Nonoxynol-9 spermicide (not the stuff that comes with some condoms) will improve the effectiveness of condoms considerably as back-up for situations like you experienced. Because you stopped using hormonal contraceptives more than 2 months ago you have no protection from them. It is impossible to say when or if you ovulated unless you are charting your fertility signs, basal body temperature, cervical position and cervical mucus. If you are late getting your period I would test. When I came off OCs 22 cycles ago my periods varied in length for almost 6 months before they stabilized so if you are a few days late don’t panic. Post and let us know how you are doing, ok?

Hugs.

Hi Jill! thanks for your help! That is the first time the condom broke so that is why I am nervous. I should be due for my period tomorrow or the next day so I am trying to stay calm until then. I do have the munchies and not to sound gross, I saw some pink yesterday when I wiped which may be a sight its on the way. At least I hope that is a sign!!! I am not ready to be pregnant yet and the reason I went off the pill was because I didn't like the way I was feeling on it plus the weight gain. Has this ever happened to you where a comdom broke?? My boyfriend did pull out, I just hope he did in time! Thanks!

I know what you mean about feeling blah while on HCs. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I stopped taking them. I’ve had 2 condom failures, both while using them as back-up while taking antibiotics when I was on OTC. After that I started helping bf with his sheath to make sure he was getting it on correctly. In both cases I didn’t have a problem. I hope your AF is on the way. Hang in there!

Good luck

(((hugs)))

Thanks again Jill!! I am such a goofball, as soon as you told me what kind of spermicide to look for, I checked the condom I had in my wallet (while sitting at my desk here in work, haha!) anyway, it says that it is the one you mentioned, Nonoxynol-9. If it is on the condom, does that mean it is also inside me to protect against the sperm or just if he leaks in the condom? And do you think the pink I saw could be a sign that its on the way? I'm very sorry, I know this is off the birth control topic and I promise not to bother you after this one.

The amount of N-9 on a condom is not considered by most people on this board enough to be terribly effective. I admit, way back when we trusted it (when we weren't also using my diaphragm, but usually we used diaphragm + condom), but I'm not sure I would now.

You do know that your wallet is one of the WORST places to keep condoms, right? Heat & the pressure of having a wallet in your pocket can degrade the condom pretty quickly...... could have even contributed to your condom failure, I'd say.

Wow, very interesting about the condom in the wallet!! the one we used that night was in my bedroom though. This one I just had in my wallet. But will remove it now! I didn't think that would be enough spermacide but I just thought it would be a little better then using one without. My boyfriend did pull out when he noticed it broke so I am hoping nothing got inside of me.

there's also pre-ejaculatory fluid that 'oozes' out of his penis before he comes.

Yeah....that is another concern I had. I did hear though, that the chances of getting pregnant off of that is very slim, at least I hope so!
