You should be aware, however, that there are disadvantages to the copper IUD, namely heavier periods. I read some research by a physician that says the average woman's monthly flow triples when she gets a copper IUD. That's certainly been true for me. I've had mine for 6 weeks. Good luck! If you get one, please keep us posted on your progress!
P.S. Make sure they insert it during your period--supposed to be an easier insertion during that time.
I just got the copper iud inserted this week. Looking to see how others have liked it. Also, confused by last response, regarding the heavier period. She wrote that she has had it for 6 weeks. Has had her period for 6 weeks? Or the iud for six weeks?
I think she meant that she's had her IUD for six weeks, at least I sure HOPE thats what she meant! I'll admit that I thought she was talking about her period as well.
I wanted to add that I would like to know what study she read that stated that a woman's period got three times as long when she got a copper IUD. I havent heard of anyone experiencing this, in fact, mine has gotten shorter by about 2-3 days since my insertion. To the original poster, dont be scared off by the possibility of having a period 3 times longer than what is normal for you. I'm not sure this is accurate.
The copper IUD releases no hormones. The copper interacts with the wearer's body chemistry to provide very effective contraceptive action.
