Birth control and lubrication

I started othro tri-cylon this past Sunday (2-22-04) and attempted to have sex tonight (2-24-04). I usually have no problem getting "wet" but this time I was really dry. We did everything we usually do so I was wondering if birth control has anything to do with this problem?

Hi Butterfly, welcome!

Hormonal contraceptives can affect the natural lubrication in some women. Most side effects from OCs disappear within three cycles as your body becomes used to the new hormones of your pills, so perhaps you dryness will go away. In the meantime have a good water based lube such as Astroglide or KY Lube on hand and don’t be shy about using plenty of it.

Good luck

I'm curious about this as well...I've been on birth control for five full months now and have noticed that I'm not as lubracated. Yet with me I was fine up until about the 4th months on it...now it's all going down hill.

I'm assuming it's because of the pills, if I end up going off of them will it eventually go back to normal?

Hi Brookie,

Yes, going off HCs will often return you to your normal libido and lubrication patterns. Over time, as we age our bodies change… nothing is forever, but if you have only been on OCs for a few years then yes. Too, a change of pill (Judie would be a good one to ask about this) to one with a different mix of hormones might lessen your dryness.

Good luck

Higher-progestin pills tend to dry women out, that was my experience.
