SISTER WAS 7 WKS PREGNANT

My sister was 7 weeks pregnant, got pregnant even though she was using the IUD. She lost her baby this afternoon. Noone should ever have to go through this. I don't believe the 99.3% effective statement is true.

Hi Tricia, Welcome!

I'm so sorry you find yourself in such a difficult position. You should be guided by your doctor's experience and advice. Prescribing information on both the ParaGard and Mirena sites say a pregnancy with an IUD inserted can be life threatening to the mother. You might want to drop by the Parents Place High Risk Pregnancy board at http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-pphighrisk for support. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hugs,

I have an IUD so I sympathize with your situation. You have no choice but to have it removed. Who knows? Maybe you will have a miracle and won't miscarry. We are praying for you. You are absolutely right that you must preserve your own life--if not for you, for your daughter. Please let us know how you are.

My husband and I agreed that the IUD needed to come out, even at the risk of terminating the pregnancy. The doctor felt there was about a 75% chance that he would cause damage because he had to blindly go into the uterous with clamps and find the string to pull out the IUD (the growth of the sac had pulled the string up into the uterous). But against the doctors advice we told him we intended to continue the pregnancy if he were able to remove the IUD without terminating the pregnancy.

Great news! He removed the IUD today and all seems well with baby. So now it will be one day at a time, hoping to avoid miscarriage, infection and potentially septic abortion or very early delivery (24-37 weeks). It will be high risk throughout the pregnancy, but I feel okay about what to watch out for and when to get to a hospital if things go bad.

I had a miscarriage last August and it was devistating. This time I feel better prepared for the possible loss. Let's just say I won't be buying maternity clothes until I really need them and won't be getting a nursery ready any time soon. We made it through the first step and can only hope that the end of the story is a happy one. For now, its wait and see.

Thank you all for your advice and support.

Congratulations on the successful IUD removal! Our thoughts are with you ... best of luck to you throughout your pregnancy, and whatever happens, always remember to take care of yourself (I know that thought can change with pregnancy). I hope the end to your story is a happy one, too. Do check back in if you can and let us know how you are doing.
