Hi Hockeybabe!
What your doctor told you is correct....if you start the pill on Day 1 of your cycle, then you are protected from pregnancy immediately. However, most doctors and this board recommends using a back up method for the first cycle of pills while you're adjusting to taking a pill everyday at around the same time, and so you won't freak out about possibly being pregnant when you get your period and it's possibly lighter/heavier or longer/shorter than what you're used to. I hope this helps!
Wishing you much love and peace!

Tameka is absolutely right. In addition, the info. about first day and Sunday starts as well as what to do if you are late or miss pills etc. is in the patient information that comes with your pills. It would be a good Idea to read that leaflet and keep it handy in case you need to refer to it.
Good luck
