Hi All,...I need an opinion or advice. I took bc pills at age 16 for about a year,..but they made me violently nauseous, puking once a month. So, I stopped. I am now 28 and in a long-term relationship,...getting married within a year. I am in graduate school and we both discussed that it would not be wise to start a family for 2 or 3 years. So, here is my question. I have been thinking of trying bc pills again for the 2-year short-term...I hear they have low-dosage ones that might be better for me. Is is wise to take them,...let's say for a year or two,..then can I stop,..and get pregnant at 30? Is it even worth it? I hear sometimes it takes longer to get pregnant after stopping pill,..but I will only have 2 years worth of hormone in my body,..not 10 years like some other women. I am going to gyn to discuss further,..but appts are booked..so in the mean time..if someone has any advice or has been there...wanting kids and bc,...and getting OLDER! Please let me know what you think....

A lot of people use BCP when they want to put off pregnancy for a couple years. When you stop taking BCP, it may take a few months for your hormones to regulate and your cycle to become regular, but that's about it. I think the problems people have with becoming pregnant right away after stopping birth control pills have to do with the body adjusting to being without the BCP, but it's not like the pills stay in your system for a long time after you stop. If they did, you wouldn't have to take the pill everyday for it to be effective.

Everybody is different. You may ovulate your first month off bcps or the 5th. It just depends. I would just make sure to be off of them 3 months prior to the earliest you want to try to conceive. This advice coming from experience :)

There are also a LOT of people who get pregnant their first month off BCP (I've known several).

This is only my opinion, but I really question that having been on BCP for a long time has an effect on conception. I think that a lot of people who have trouble conceiving after BCP would have had trouble conceiving anyway! Like I said, my opinion, no scientific basis.

Also, for what its worth, I had been on BCP for nine years & got pregnant *while still taking them* so long term use does not necessarily make it harder to get pregnant!
