Did u know that something as simple as a dentist prescribing a muscle relaxer can cause you to get pregnant while on the pill? It happened to my friend. This is exactly why I won't get on the pill. I have heard of way too many people that have gotten pregnant while on it. I on the other hand am pregnant, we are only 1 week apart, and I was trying. When I have the baby I do not want any more children (I have 2) but I am only 23. Sterilization isn't really an option right now for me. I refuse to go back on the shot and the pill. Is the IUD the best form of bc for someone who doesn't want to get pregnant and not have to worry about it?

The only method of birth control that is 100% effective is abstinence.

Hi amber...

Whats funny is that I read the Lets Talk About Sex board a lot here on iVillage... on that board you said you were 22 and wanted your 23 year old fiance to get a vasectomy. I guess all of the member's insistances have made you realize that you need to take BC into your own hands if you truly want to be protected. Good on 'ya.

Anywhoo... yes, the IUD would be a great option for you. It rivals female sterilization as the most effective method of BC at 99.3% efficacy. As well, it has a one time fee (which will vary according to your insurance and where you live) and is over all very cost effective.

Actually, something even more simple than a muscle relaxer can weaken the strength of the pill -- antibiotics. The point here is that a lot of things can weaken OCs strength. That's why we use a back up method during the times that these things come into our systems.

Yes - :) - I did post on the other site about a vasectomy, which is what I would PREFER - but i realize that it may not be the best option (I am 22 now will be 23 when the baby is born.) Or things could change, so I am looking into other options.

Is it possible that your friend was prescribed antibiotics as well? Sometimes when people are having dental work, the dentist will prescribe a/b's to keep from getting an infection. The one time I took a/b's while on the pill, my doctor made VERY sure I was aware it could counter-act with the b/c pills.

I have the copper-IUD now, and have been pretty happy with it. No pills to take; no hormones to make me crazy. Just normal, female me. :)

No - she was only on muscle relaxers (she was having muscle spasms in her jaw from clenching her teeth - from stress). That was it. Her doctor later told her that it was probably what went wrong. So it must not be totally unheard of. Me personally, I was only on the pill for 3 months - mainly to start my cycle earlier because I had just gotten off of the shot. It worked - I got my period the next month, compared to 5 months the previous time I stopped the shot. And then, 5 months later after quitting the pill- I am pregnant. I think I have decided that I am going to try the IUD. I am going to at least give it a try.

For the women who have it or had it - when they inserted it did u have to be on your period when they inserted it or not?? Just a question. Are u protected as soon as they inserted or is there a waiting period?
