Sorry - this gets a little graphic...

I had an IUD put in this week and have been having a lot of discharge since.

It's probably OK but I would put a call in to your dr....I've had an IUD for about 8 months now and I don't remember any "discharge" but for the first few months my periods were out of whack....lasting longer and very heavy....they are basicly now just spotting for a few days....I'm very happy about that....

I have had my IUD for a little over 2 years. No problems what so ever. I LOVE IT! But this week has been a little strange. About a week ago I had some pain and asked a friend about it-they said it sounded like I was ovulating. That should not be possible with an IUD. Then this morning I started to bleed. Has this happened to anyone else? What does this mean?

Hi unicorn, welcome!

You didn’t say which IUD you are using, but neither of the 2 IUDs in general use in the U.S. list ovulation suppression as one of their several means of contraception. The ParaGard Copper-T IUD does not prevent ovulation at all and with The Mirena a study showed at least 45% of cycles were ovulatory at one year and 75% after 4 years. There are a lot of things in the abdomen that could be giving you twinges other than ovulation. However, it seems to me that what you are experiencing might just be pain associated with ovulation. Even if it is you should be well protected from pregnancy. IUDs are a very effective means of contraception.

Good luck

I'm not an expert, but I don't think IUDs stop ovulation.....It sounds like ovulation...Sometimes some women feel pains and have a little spotting around the time of ovulation.....
