I heard that Ortho-Tri cyclin birth control helps your acne. Does it really help it??

I am switching pills and i wanted to get one that also helps your pimples too. Plz let me know, thanks!

BCP's do help many women with acne (any pill can have this effect, OTC is the only one that's been officially tested to be able to make that claim though).

OTC actually gave me acne. Pills with a higher progestin kept my skin clear.

My advice is: if you're otherwise happy with the pill you're on, don't switch just to try and clear up acne. It sometimes takes women several tries to find a pill that doesn't cause "other" problems like weight gain, libido loss, facial hair growth, etc.... If you lucked into one on the first try that doesn't cause other problems, IMO, it's better to stick with it rather than risk the other unpleasant side-effects.

However, if you're unhappy with some of the other aspects of your pill, keep "shopping around" until you find one that works. I am personally on my fourth different brand in 8 years and am using the new OTC-Lo; it's only been two months, but so far, so good. Good Luck!

Loestrin and Estrostep kept my skin clear and I did not gain weight but I had other issues with them-moodiness and anxiousness. From my experience, I would rather deal with the skin problem then the moodiness and anxiety. Though they may not have that effect on you. If you are happy with OTC otherwise, I suggest an acne system, the generic of Proactiv, called Acne Free. It is sold at Walmart for about 20 bucks. I think it does an amazing job!

Hi,

I'm new around these parts, hope no one minds me poking in my two cents!

Anyway, I originally went on the pill so I could start using retin-A for my skin. My doctor wanted to MAKE SURE I wouldn't get pregnant while on it, because it can cause bad things for the baby. So he put me on Marvelon, and before I ever even started with the retin-A my skin seemed to be getting better. I thought, "gee, now I don't even really need it". It was nice finally getting the push to go on the pill because we already had two kids and hadn't decided on the third yet. I can't believe I waited that long to go on the pill in the first place. Anyhoo, a while after that I started seeing the commercials for otc and how it was "clinically proven...." so I asked my doctor, (a different one by that time) if I could switch to that one because of the claims. I'm not even sure why, because the Marvelon seemed to being doing a good job, but I guess those commercials got me! So I switched and there was NO difference in my skin. Basically what I'm saying is if you are getting fairly reasonable results with a certain pill, OTC isn't going to do anything greater. Though I've been getting some pretty nasty headaches and started to attribute that to Ortho Tri-cyclen. So we switched me to Alesse, and bang! Acne started getting bad again....grrrrr! (Headaches didn't get any better, so now I'm on the patch...) Already my skin seems to be recupperating thank goodness. I guess it just really depends on whether you are on a typical pill as compared to a low dose type pill as to whether it will help your skin or not. My doctor as well said that most of the pills are pretty much the same in terms of helping that acne aspect.

One more thing! I use ProActiv as well, but certainly am not religous about washing my face every morning and night. (I've been known to go to bed with make-up still on.... I know! TSK! TSK!) So I believe it's mostly the hormonal contraception that has the biggest impact.

Hey, am I the only one out there who did notice an improvement in her skin from OTC? Because, it did improve my skin, and had no other side effects I noticed.

Express!

Ive heard from a lot of people that it doesnt really help. My skin is not like terribly bad with pimples, i just wanted to try something else becuz i just stopped my birthcontrol like two weeks ago becuz i thought i was getting headaches from it, but it turns out i wasnt (PERIOD TIME AND DIDNT REALIZE IT). I really like my brand i was, no bad side effects or aanything, but since i stopped the pill, i thought maybe ill try one that will help clear up pimples. I think now i am gonna stay on the one i was on before (Mircette). I guess ihave to wait til my next period to start my new pack right??

thanks for eeveryones help! :):)

I have tried Ortho Tri cyclin and it appeared to be great for my skin. I recently switched to the patch and am thinking about going back to ortho for that exact reason. Hope it does well for you also.
