Sponge contraception

I was wondering if there are any sponge users here and if they could give me some input. I have been on the pill for two years and have had no sex-drive since. I have tried switching pills but that has not helped so I am looking for a non-hormonal form of contraception. I was wondering if anyone uses or has used the Protectaid sponge which is availiable on-line. (this is a sponge manufactured and sold in Canada.) I also heard that the Today Sponge is back on the market and was wondering if anyone had used this one before it had left the market or since, and why did they stop making it for a few years anyway? I know that the sponge is not as effective as the pill, as I have heard it is only about 90% effective. Other than that, are there any particular cons to this method of birth control? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi adeena, welcome!

I have used both Today (the original some years ago) and Protectaid. The sponge is basically a one-size-fits-most spermicide delivery device and can move around a good bit during IC a fact I found worrisome. I feel far more confident in either a cervical cap or diaphragm. For a comparison of the sponge and diaphragm see http://www.contraceptiononline.org/contrareport/article01.cfm?art=255 Both Today and Protectaid are available on-line.

Good luck
