BV and Birth Control Pills

Is there a link between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and birth control pills? I was recently given a Rx for it and I haven't ever had that before.
And what is BV? Is it sexually transmitted or within my body's chemistry?
The medicine that was Rx was brutal, something called metrozidol? Let me just say they really mean it when it says no drinking alcoholic beverages while on this Rx. I had one "little" drink and had flu like symptoms for the rest of the week :(
Any information or advise would be appreciated.

The thing that gets me is I had been going to see one NP in teh office for a few years, the last time I was there I was really freaked out and my pulse was through the roof(I hate the gyno, I had an abnormal pap the first time I ever went) and she told me that if I didn't get my pulse under control I would die. Thanks, that's comforting. I mention to her that I have some irritation and itching and funny smelling discharge and she said everythibg looked fine. So anyway, immediately following that visit I went to finish up some tests in another part of the office (I was in the FDA study for Seasonale) and the NP comes in, gets in a fight with the nurse that was drawing blood, etc, IN FRONT OF ME! I talk to the head Dr. at the office the next day and it was determined that I not see that NP again.
So six months later I see a different NP. Wonderful lady. I mention to her, as I'd told the EVIL NP, that I had some irritation on my vulva. She says "try using Dove, it doesn't look that bad. If it doesn't get better call me." Turns out she called me back later that week, another abnormal pap. I went back two days after that for a biopsy, blah, blah, get the results back and she says that she also had the samples tested for infection. She said it appeared I had BV for at least 6 months. The NICE NP said that looking at my charts EVIL NP had noted I had irritation in my vagina. Being that I was at a gyno office every six months and had complained about an issue six months before I think the first NP should have some sort of serious reprimand.
Anyway, enough of my venting. I have to use metrogel in June, I guess to clear up any lingering infection (heck, i'd already had it more than six months, what's just a little bit longer? ). I do think there was some link between the BV and pills, but several other factors might have been involved. Arounf the time I started having issues with irritation I had been swimming a lot, had sex with DH often and had been using Seasonale. I honestly don't know if any, some or all had a factor in me developing BV.
Hope this helps.

BTW- I have a re-pap in June and please EVERYONE keep their fingers crossed that it comes back normal. Otherwise I'll have to have ym crvix dilated and frozen, which sounds pretty un-fun.
