Virgins with questions.

My boyfriend (23) and I (20) are waiting on my doctor’s appointment in April for me to start on the pill. Even then it will be a month’s wait after that...in the mean time we are discussing other forms of contraception.

We decided on using a condom in conjunction with spermicide. We are both virgins so we are naturally a little nervous about the effectiveness of this method to prevent pregnancy. Which spermicide is best? Are foams more effective? Is there another method we should use or should we just wait until I’m on the pill?

Thanks,

We waited until I got on the pill. Then we also used Trojans with N-9 (I hope you know which thing I mean, I can't spell it). The only problem we had is my fiance (now husband) became allergic to the n-9. So, I'd recommend trying to test whatever product first on both of you, just to make sure you'll have no further problems.

As for effectiveness, I personally don't know. There should be something out there on the web, maybe Planned Parenthood has something on their site.

Good Luck

According to the information that comes with my BC pills, the typical failure rates during the first year of use for spermicide alone and condoms alone are 26% and 14% respectively. So one can assume that it will be a little less when using both. Don't rely on the spermicide that comes on some condoms, it doesn't add much protection at all.

Your best option, of course, is to wait until you're on the pill.

I used the tubes of spermicide you insert (much like you do for a yeast infection) and he used condoms...this worked well for 4 years with no mistakes. Just FYI, be careful with the pill....many antibiotics can alter the effectiveness as well as many herbal things like metabolife or any other herb meant to speed up your metabolism. Studies show that you speed up your metabolism enough that the pill works thru your body faster than 24 hours leaving you unprotected possibly.

I used only condoms for the first four years I was sexually active (no spermicide, just condoms).
