Hi, this is for any of you who have diaphragms. I have heard that they can be used as a menstrual cup. Is this the case? This is kind of graphic, but: any of you who have used your diaphragm for this purpose:

is it effective? did it leak? did it hold heavy flow? how often do you have to empty it? can it be worn at night?

I got a diaphragm back in January but have since split from my SO and figure if it can save me the cost of pads, perhaps I can use it for something! I just wanted to make sure it was safe and effective before I tried it.

THanks!

Hi ivkristie,

I use a diaphragm for flow control and contraception during my period. I have found mine quite effective but a lot will depend on how well yours fits. There are good fits and then there are excellent fits so you are just going to have to experiment. My D is an 80mm Milex Wide-seal. It doesn’t leak and during my heavy days it will hold about 4 ½ hours of flow before it needs emptying and I can wear mine at night when my flow slows. Different manufacturers have slightly different depth domes so it will depend on the diameter and to some extent on who the mfg. is and of course your rate of flow as to how long yours will take to fill. It will take some practice getting used to how it feels when full. It’s quite safe to use for flow control, you just don’t want to forget you’re wearing it. When worn too long it can cause an odor and old blood could set up conditions for an infection.

Good luck

I use my diphragm for menstrual especially when I have a lot of spotting. That way I don't have to wear a pantiliner all day for days. I don't think it works very well if you are having heavy days because if it overfills and can't hold anymore than it will let some gush out and you will have a gush instead of regular menstrual flow. But that was when I had the copper IUD and was having periods so heavy I coudln't get in the shower with out leaving a trail of blood. Sick I know......but true. I think the MIlex wideseals are awsome and they aren't made out of latex so you can put it in the dishwasher to sterilize it. They don't stain either because they aren't latex.
