Alesse and Breakthrough Bleeding

I've had so much conflicting information about being protected while experiencing breakthrough bleeding (past the 3 month mark) that I decided to call the Patient Information Line for Alesse. The representative assured me that even though I was having breakthrough bleeding on Alesse, as long as I took my pills at the same time every day and did not miss, I was fully protected and the efficacy of the pill was not compromised.

She told me that if you experience breakthrough bleeding in the first half of the cycle it is because of low estrogen levels and if you experience breakthrough bleeding in the second half it is due to low progestin levels.

She suggested I consider changing pills only if the breakthrough bleeding becomes too much of a nuisance.

To say I'm relieved is putting it mildly!

I thought I would share this information in case anyone else out there has had the same exprience and worries.
