Good Morning Ladies!

In my experience, my partner has *never* been hurt by the strings of my IUD. My Dr cut them at 2.5cm so that I can find them more easily when I check them every month. In my opinion, anyone whos partner is being "poked" by the string has a Dr. who has cut her IUD strings too short and should therefore have her IUD replaced. I agree that being "poked" by an IUD is NOT the most common reason to have an IUD removed; for that matter, I dont believe it is even that common of an occourance.

I will keep watching this poll and see what comes to light.

Bump…. If anyone is wondering why this poll is being conducted we are trying to get some indication of how frequent and serious discomfort from IUD strings might be for a partner. The problem has rarely been discussed on this board. See discussion 11508.1 for background. Comments are welcome http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-bhcontracept&msg=11508.1&ctx=0

Hi everyone,

Since there has been a lot of member interest in IUDs recently and some discussion of problems related to short strings I thought now would be a good time to revisit this poll.

My doctor told me this was the reason he leaves the strings a little long when he does an IUD insertion. They can poke out of the cervix like bristles if the strings are too short.

The strings on my Mirena IUD are about 1 inch long. My husband has been able to feel them during deep penetration, but they don't poke him or hurt or anything. I don't know if he's still noticing them or not, he hasn't mentioned it in a while now. It certainly hasn't slowed down his desire for me at all if he is still noticing :)

Getting an IUD was my absolute last method of birth control to try before we looked into one of us going for a sterilization. I was scared of getting an IUD and now I wish I'd done it much sooner. All those terrible side effects on my moods from hormonal methods are finally gone and my husband says he's never seen me so happy.
