I was using the Mirena IUD and discontinued use due to side effects from the hormones. I never had a problem with the strings. My doctor trimmed them so they barely extended out of my cervix.
I am now trying to let my body get back to it's on normal rhythym. I chose not to go back on the pill because I want to be hormone free for awhile.
I had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years, and had it removed for the following reasons:
1. Cystic acne on face, neck, back and chest.
2. Hair growth on face, between breasts, and any pubic hair I removed grew back twice as fast.
3. Battled constant yeast infections for the whole 3 1/2 years.
4. Vaginal dryness severe enough I couldn't have sex in the end.
5. Breasts that were constantly sore.
I ended up fairly depressed because of all the symptoms. I had my Mirena removed in August last year. It has been 11 months since removal, and I am still battling minor flare ups of acne and experience vaginal dryness in some parts of my cycle. We now use condoms during my fertile times, but condoms contribute to the dryness. My breasts are no longer sore, hair growth reversed, and I haven't had a yeast infection since January.
