Ok, so i have been on the pill for about 4 years now. at first i still got my period, it wasn't regular, i had it for 3 weeks, didn't for 1. so my doctor changed my pill and now i dont get it at all. trust me im not complaining, but what im concerned with is, is this going to effect my future, being able to have kids. i haven't gotten my period in 4 years. is that doing damage to my system. and the thing is, i still go for my regular check ups and everything but its just something that weighs in the back of my mind. every time i see kids i often think if i will ever be able to be blessed with that experience. my doctor said things are fine but how does she really know? someone please help me!!

Hi confusedheart, welcome!

I don’t think there is any evidence that stopping you periods by means of hormonal contraceptives is harmful in the long run. There is even some evidence that it might be beneficial by saving your eggs until you want to use them. If your periods stopped because of poor nutrition (secondary amenorrhea) that could be very bad news for many other reasons beside your fertility but as long as your doc says you are ok you should be ok. If this is really freaking you out you can always get a second medical opinion but I don’t think you need to. OK?

Good luck

I had this same thing happen, but it's only been since the beginning of November for me. I got married in October and am 33, can you hear my clock ticking? lol! My doctor did a pregnancy test and asked me a few questions and thinks it's no problem at all. My periods were always light anyway, and I had a norplant a few years ago with almost no bleeding for the first couple of years. I switched to the patch this month to see if I would bleed on it. Logically, I know that withdrawal bleeding from hormonal contraceptives shows no evidence of fertility at all, but I think I will feel better anyway. When I was not close to trying to have a baby, I loved not having periods but I am in a different place now.

If it does really bother you, they probably can switch you to something that will allow you to bleed. May I ask what pill you are taking? I was on necon 1/35.

Good luck, I think you are fine. I am proud of you for not being as paranoid as I am!

Thank you for getting back to me. its good to know that im not the only one. i am not sure of the exact name of the pill, but i know its microgestin 1.5 fe. i hope that helps a little bit. im not too paranoid yet, im only 23, i have plenty of time. its just been so weird not having it for 4 years. im used to not having it. i wasn't sure if it was causing damage for when i want to go ahead and have kids, ya know. but thank you for sharing with me that information. how is the patch working out for you? i was interested in looking into that but i sort of dont want to change because i like the way things are!

Microgestrin is the generic for Loestrin...that's what I take.

From what I've read, our periods are "synthetic" when we're on the pill and created only to give women a sense of continuity and security that they're not pregnant. My understanding is that it doesn't affect overall health to have or not have a regular period (unless it's caused by something more underlying like anorexia or something).
