depo/NFP/abortive aspect

Would it be possible to get depo, yet still chart temperatures/check mucus (NFP)to see if any breakthrough ovulation occurs? I'm concerned about the abortive aspect of depo, but if I could see if I was ovulating, I could use a backup/barrier method for the rest of that cycle. Do you guys know if this would work?

Hi there,
Absolutely it works - the symptoms of ovulation are the same whether you're getting depo shots or not, and many women do this.
You can chart on Depo if you want. Several members have charted (briefly I think) on NuvaRing and pills to verify the method effectiveness by watching for a temp shift. I don’t remember anyone saying they have charted on Depo but perhaps someone has. After a cycle or two when their temps remained stable and no shift occurred they were confident enough to stop charting. I think, if I was concerned enough to chart, I would also record cervical position and cervical mucus as a cross check. There is a certain amount of discipline required to be able to chart correctly: a stable routine with a minimum amount of sleep and temping at the same time each day etc. If you aren’t already familiar with the procedure a good book on the subject is Toni Weschler’s Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Let you know what your charting shoes, ok?
Good luck
Jill
