Could someone explain all the ways the birth control works? I keep getting different info. I know about these ways:

1) prevent ovulation

2) thicken cervical mucus

3) thin out the uterine lining

4) affect tubal peristalsis (does it slow it down or speed it up?? Why does this help at all??)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mrs..

To understand all of the things that happen, it's best to understand that there are really a few different 'cycles' that we lump together and call our period.

Wow, thanks for all the info. It was really helpful. I had learned that all a few years back so it was a good review. I'm still confused on the tubal peristalsis. Does the birth control pill speed it up or slow it down? I have heard both so I'm confused. And how does this change in tubal peristalsis contribute to the effectiveness of the pill? Thanks!!

Hi there!

Sorry to leave you hanging - I was out of town for a few days.

Everything I'm finding says "possible" inhibition of uterine tube peristalsis.
