Yeast infection and a missed pill?

Hi guys!

I ended up taking my 4th active pill late during this month's pack, but my fiance and I have not had sex since the day I took my 2nd active pill. However, I think I have a yeast infection. I started symptoms about 2 days ago (today I am taking my 9th active pill.) I have read that yeast infections can be a sign of pregnancy. Is this a possibility, or could just taking the pill late trigger a yeast infection? Or maybe something else caused it...I don't know. I am just kind of worried. Any light shed on this would be helpful!!! Thanks in advance!!

Hi luvbert,

No method of contraception is 100% effective except abstinence. However, if you have been taking your pills correctly: on time (+/-2 hours of your normal pill-time) haven’t been sick and vomited or had diarrhea within 2 hours after taking your pill and haven’t been taking medicines or supplements that can reduce the effectiveness of your pills, then you should be fine. Oral contraceptives can contribute to yeast infections in some women. A number of things can cause the ph of your vagina to change and bring on a YI but I don’t think taking a pill late had anything to do with it. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I guess that is the problem...I DID take a pill late. However, I took that pill late 2 days AFTER having sex, and I have not had sex since then. I have not been able to find out anything about how that could have increased my risk of pregnancy...maybe it's not a big issue? If you could let me know any info you have about this situation, that would be great! Thanks for your help!

It could depend on how late you took the pill. This board considers within 2 hours of your normal pill time as on-time. More than that and a woman very sensitive to her hormone levels may begin to experience side effects such as spotting. I think ‘late’ could be as much as 8-12 hours. After that, I would consider it a missed pill. Until recently the manufacturers and the FDA considered no back-up necessary if only one pill was missed. Now however the FDA is suggesting that OC labeling be changed to recommend that if only one pill is missed back-up should be used for 7 days. The chances of a pregnancy are very slight if a pill is missed and even less if you were only late with one. No one can say exactly what the additional risk of a late pill might be but it should be very, very small if any at all. I really don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Good luck

Hi sweetie,

Relax! This is how it works: say you took a pill late, and for some freak reason, it caused you to ovulate (which it probably did NOT - you do know that the function of the Pill is to suppress ovulation, right?). You probably wouldn't ovulate the same exact DAY you took the late Pill, especially if the Pill was only a few hours late (you don't tell us how late it was). Maybe you ovulate the day after, say. So that's 3 days after having IC that you ovulated. The sperm would have to be alive for three days inside you, then make its way to the egg. Now not only is it unlikely that the sperm could live inside you for that long, it's extremely unlikely that you ovulated at all! And even if both of those things do happen, your cervical mucous has thickened (a "back-up" effect of the Pill, you could say) to make it hard for the sperm to get to the egg. PLUS, another effect of the Pill is to make conditions in your uterus hostile to a fertilized egg anyway, and it might not even be able to implant. So I'd say your chances of pregnancy are pretty slim. Of course, as Jill said, nothing is 100%, but I certainly wouldn't stress out over this until I missed a period (which I'm betting you don't do).

I definitely wouldn't take a sudden YI to be a sign of pregnancy. I have one too, actually, and it's just my body telling me to eat more balanced food! YI's are brought on MUCH more frequently by other things, including birth control pills, than pregnancy.

Hope you feel better about this!

Okay, I think I just need to calm down about this. Sometimes my mind just runs away with me and I begin to freak out. Thanks for the information and support from you guys! I'm so glad I found this message board...it has answered a lot of questions for me.
