I just started the ring about a month ago. My friends are all telling me now that it isn't healthy, etc. Any thoughts?

Hi jeska_d, welcome!

There is nothing at all unhealthy about using NuvaRing! If a woman is uncomfortable touching her gnitals she might find there is an ick-factor but that has nothing whatever to do with the healthfullness of NuvaRing. Most members who post about about the ring love it.

THanks for stopping by,

Unless your friends are gynecologists or pharmacologists, I don't think I'd take their word that it's "unhealthy".....

Hello, thank you for your response! Maybe "unhealthy" was the wrong word. I was informed that it has a higher risk for eptopic pregnancy and also infection. I hope this info is incorrect as I prefer this method over the pill!

I don't know about with NuvaRing, but I know that the risk of ectopic pregnancy with the pill is *lower* than without (that is, of the .1% that get pregnant on the pill, a lower percentage of those pregnancies will be ectopic than people who weren't using birth control when they got pregnant). I assume this would be similar for all hormonal methods of contraception, but I don't know for sure.

As I understand it, NuvaRing is a non-absorbent material. Thus it will not hold bacteria & has no higher risk of infection.

It sounds to me as though someone might have confused NuvaRing and IUDs. The incidence of ectopic pregnancies is slightly higher with IUDs and infection was higher also, though when used in a monogamous relationship it is not a problem.
