Should I start on Yasmin?

For almost 8 years my husband and I have used condoms and not once have we had an unintentional pregnancy; yet I asked my gyn to go on the pill because I started having irregular cycles. She suggested Yasmin. I have heard mixed reviews on it. I am a bit leary concerning the increase in potassium (does that mean no bananas, gatorade, etc?). About 6 years ago I was on Ortho-tricyclen for 6 months (cysts) and felt WONDERFUL. Any advice? HELP!!!

My understanding about the potassium issue and Yasmin is that if you don't already have a issue with it, then it won't be affected.

I'm wondering if you had such a good experience with OTC why you wouldn't go back to that? Our bodies do change in what they need though.

I am taking Yasmin and I love it! Can't say enough good things about it, but remember the progestin in it is different than it is in OTC.

Good luck!

Its not a bad idea to avoid vitamins with potassium and salt substitutes while taking Yasmin. Also if you take NSAIDs on a REGULAR basis, that can raise your potassium to dangerous levels.

Yasmin has the equivalent of 25 mg of spironolactone. I am on 100 mg of spiro, and even at that level I only have to have a blood test every 4 months. If you are concerned, I'm sure your doctor would be willing to test you every once in a while.
