Time for birth control! :) Sorry, long!

Ok I'm trying to be happy about it at least, despite the guilt :) I had my first time earlier this week. Well, a sorry attempt at a first time :) We both got scared in the middle and stopped.

So, I've been charting. He's a doctor and keeps an eye on it too. But if there is anyone here who uses NFP I'd love to chat about how you handle the pre-ovulation rules. While I feel pretty confident, this happened pre-ovulation which always makes it just a bit more risky. I'd love to hear from someone who uses the pre-ovulation rules successfully! This all happened Monday, and today is the first day I am noticing signs of fertility. Its just scary since this is the first time!

Also I'd like to at least consider other forms of BC while we aren't married. The pill is not a possibility right now because I need blood tests, but for my future education I would really like info on whether it is possible to use fertility awareness with the pill. My feeling is that using the pill would disguise the signs of ovulation, and I don't want to use the pill unless I can be 100% sure I'm not ovulating. Anyone know where to get info on this?

I've never even seen a condom before. No idea how to use one. And honestly the failure rate seems pretty high! But I think I'd be willing to do that + fertility awareness. What is the best kind? I think I want to avoid N-9 because I have sensitive skin in general so I'm guessing it'd be the same down there?? :)

Any other suggestions? I'm definitely not comfortable inserting things.

Hey iposh! Good questions! I have a problem with hormonal birth control too since it can cause early abortions. Theoretically, you could still use FAM with charting, checking cm, and cervical position while on the pill to make sure you weren't ovulating, but it wouldn't be reliable. That's because it would mess with your fertility signals (esp. cm) And if you're going to do all the FAM checks anyway, why put yourself at risk with the pill? I would just suggest being conservative with the rules and forgetting about the pill. It's not worth it.

The biggest problem with using the pill/depo/any hormonal bc is that it takes awhile to wear off. After you go off the pill/depo, it can take up to 2 years for your fertility to return. During this time, your could be ovulating normally but your uterine lining could still be infertile. It takes awhile for the lining to build back up to pre-pill fertility. Thus, you could be aborting babies without knowing it. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I didn't even think about the post-pill time when my doc put me on it for medical reasons. I always just assumed if I got married I could stop right beforehand.

Are you doing FAM? Do you just abstain pre-ovulation? Obviously this wasn't planned but I knew in the back of my mind that I wasn't seeing any signs of fertility yet. But now that its actually happened, there is the fear I messed up and didn't notice some cm. I think today is my peak day so I'm trying not to worry, but its so hard!

Hi sarabecca,

Actually, the medical community considers abortion as the removal or induced expulsion of a fetus. So an egg that doesn’t implant is not an abortion. You have every right to your beliefs but this board deals with birth control not religion and we try to provide medical facts. We have asked you before to curb the use of inflammatory comments in your posts and I do so, again, now. We have also asked you to share with us citations of clinical studies to back up your comments, not Right-To-Life proselytizing and you have provided none. If you would like to join the abortion debate please try iVillage’s Parent Soup Abortion Debate Board http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-psabortdeb

Not sure if this is what you are looking for backup on, but http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=569625

I hope I haven't offended anyone. These are just my personal beliefs and I'm trying to stick with them. After all, I am a lawyer so I don't necessarily go by legal definitions :) I always try to avoid using the "a" word here, but I'm never going to pretend I don't believe life begins at conception.

And I know I wasn't the one you were directing that to! Just wanted to keep the peace :)

Hi iposh,

No you haven’t offended anyone. Thanks for the citation. More recent studies don’t seem to support the findings of the 1978 study you cited. See:

The effects of oral contraceptives on reproduction (1990)

http://www4.infotrieve.com/newmedline/detail.asp?NameID=2576256&Session=&searchQuery=spontaneous+abortion++AND+contraceptives&count=416

Risk factors for spontaneous abortion and its recurrence (1988)

http://www4.infotrieve.com/newmedline/detail.asp?NameID=3273482&Session=&searchQuery=spontaneous+abortion++AND+contraceptives&count=416

We aren’t here to change the personal beliefs of anyone. I wish you well if you will be using FAM/NFP. It takes considerable discipline and knowledge to use either one correctly. As I mentioned before FAM/NFP is unforgiving of mistakes and shortcuts so if you can’t afford an unintended pregnancy you should be very sure of what you are doing.

Good luck

I'm sorry you feel this way. It is actually really easy and requires very little discipline. This is all my opinion of course. But if you talk to women who use this method, you will find the vast maojority of them saying it is very simple and easy.

I've got to go right now, but I'll be checking those studies you posted when I get back!
