NUVARING NEWBIE! Question....

Do I have to wait until my period starts before I insert my Nuvaring for the first time ever? I'm going to be waiting for about a month if I wait for my next period to start, but I've passed the "five day" time period for inserting it the first time. I want to insert it so that I can see how I like it before seeing my boyfriend at the end of May, but I need to know how important it is to wait until my period starts to insert it. Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sandiegoparrothead, welcome!

No, you don’t ‘have’ to wait until your period to insert the ring. Waiting until your period serves 2 purposes. Your period indicates that you aren’t pg and your natural hormones are at their lowest levels of your cycle making it more comfortable for you to add the synthetic hormones from your pills. If there is no possibility that you are pg then you could insert the ring now on any day you choose. Adding the ring hormones on top of your own might be a bit uncomfortable, but it might not as side effects from hormonal contraceptives can be a very individual thing. It usually takes 3 cycles or so for your body to become accustomed to the new hormones. Your period may change schedule and consistency under control of the hormones from the ring and this board recommends the use of back-up during the entire first cycle on a new pill or method while you are learning to use it correctly and for peace of mind if your period is late or different. Hope this helps.

Good luck
