Hi Everyone -

Just a question for everyone. I went off of Birth Control about three months ago and now am wondering why I did. Anyway, we've been using condoms and last week, I decided that it would be best to use them with a Spermicide. Well we had sex and Tuesday, and the condom ended up slipping off while my guy was pulling out. My question is do spermicides make anyone else really, really, dry? I'm thinking that is what the problem was. So after being frantic I decided to call my OBGYN and get the morning after pill just to be on the safe side. So I'm still freaking out about the whole ordeal and wondered if I could get some imput. THanks!

Hi golfingirl2003, welcome!

That hasn’t usually been my experience but I suppose it would depend what you used and how your body reacted to the chemicals in the spermicide. What spermicide were you using? When I use a spermicide it’s usually Ortho Options Gynol II Jelly and that provides some additional lubrication. I have tried Vaginal Contraceptive Film (VCF) which is applied as a very small wafer positioned over the tip of the cervix. I didn’t have any additional lube from that. Your partner should hold the top of the condom at the base of his shaft as he withdraws to prevent it coming off and spilling. I hope you are feeling better and calming down.

Good luck to you

I would think it depends on the kind of spermicide you used. Foams & gels (in my experience) are more likely to add lubrication than diminish it - some of them making it really sloppy! When I used VCFilm, it made for a lubrication problem. Film has to dissolve, & I found it was absorbing ALL of my (normally plentiful) natural lubrication & made extra lube (Astroglide) necessary.

Make sure he's holding the top of the condom when he withdraws, it is important to keep all those little spermies trapped!!!

I prefer condoms without spermicide, actually, just regular lubricant. I found the spermicide condoms irritated me some. Also, condoms will dry you out faster than your natural body. I'd recommend keeping some KY on hand... that will help matters.

Also, if the condom slipped off when your guy was pulling out, make sure he holds on to it when he pulls out.

Good call getting the morning after pill though - you'll feel relieved at least that way. Good luck!
