I went to the Gyn today because I was having some itching. It turns out I have bacterial vaginosis. I was given a prescription for metro gel (basically vaginal Flagyl). I'm assuming this would descrease the effectiveness of the ring. I don't think it is too much of a problem because I won't be seeing my BF for another two weeks. I know you can leave the ring in longer, but can you take it out a little early, like at day 19 to move your period?
Also my gyn was surprised to hear that since starting the ring (in December) I have developed acne on my chest and back. They are very small little pimples and have cleared up since getting some sun. She said she doubts it was the cause since the amount of hormones are so small. However, I remember someone else on here posting about it. I hope this goes away soon. I'm glad I went to the Dr. because I was sure it was a yeast infection! Thanks, Jen

I've moved my period sometimes with the ring, though usually I take it out later instead of earlier. If, for example, I want to move my Wednesday start to a Saturday start (if I've got something going on during the week), I remove my ring on Wednesday so that my period is worst on the weekend, then I insert a new ring sometime between Sunday and Tuesday (my normal day is Sunday). According to the patient information you can leave the ring in up to 4 weeks, though some doctors will allow patients up to 30-35 days. If you remove your ring early, you'll have to insert your next ring early, so you're either changing your start day, adding extra days to this ring (leaving it in longer), or adding extra days to the next ring (taking this one out early). My preference is for a shorter ring-free week. There's nothing magical about 21 days, but for my own comfort I always go later rather than earlier.
I get breakouts occasionally, but there are so many things that contribute to acne that I don't worry about it. Usually I figure it's something I'm eating, the weather, or how much I'm putting my hands up to my face!
Good luck, I hope that answers your questions!
