Bizarre "period" - am I OK?

I've been on the birth control pill for almost 8 years now and have always had very regular, predictable periods. This past one, though, has been completely weird, despite a month of flawless pill-taking!
I should have started my period today, but I started bleeding in a sort of spotty fashion about 3 days ago. Yesterday morning, I came close to passing out for the first time in my life (still not sure exactly why) and, when I recovered, I was hit with the worst cramps I've had in about 10 years! They didn't last long and I haven't experienced anything like them since.
So here I am on the day my period usually starts in earnest, still getting very spotty bleeding. If it continues this way without ever getting any heavier, can I consider this a "normal" period? I didn't have sex at all this past cycle until a few days ago, so I can't imagine that I'm pregnant.
Just curious if anyone else has had a really light "period" after so many years of normal ones! Thanks!!

Our bodies change, so after 8 years on the pill it is not unusual to begin to experience irregular bleeding. What does concern me though are the fainting spell and the extremely heavy cramps afterward. Have you been exercising heavily, changed your diet or begun taking any new meds? Have you had your blood pressure taken recently? If I were you I’d talk to my doctor about the fainting and cramps and test just to make sure where you are. Let us know how you are doing, ok?
Good luck
Jill
