In reading the literature on the nuvaring, weight gain was one of the first side effects listed. Does weight gain occur more frequently than with the birth control pill? Experiences please?

Thanks

I was on the ring for a year and didn't gain any weight. It was even my first year of college when you get the 'freshman fifteen' too. But, everyone is different, never know till you try. I miss the ring, it's great to not have to worry about a stupid pill every morning. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Weight gain is probably one of the first side effects listed with most prescription drugs, not just birth control! Side effects, when they're reported from the clinical trials, are anything that the people experience, whether drug-related or not. That's why one of the allergy medications has a listed side effect of menstrual irregularities! Weight gain, for some folks, is a fact of life regardless of the birth control they're using, the average is a couple pounds a year, so it's likely that it will show up on any medication that's taken over a long period of time.

Personally, after almost a year and half of ring use, I haven't gained any weight (nor did I gain weight with the pill). I've weighed about the same in the last 12 years, the last seven and a half of which I've been on hormonal contraception (yes I eat well and exercise frequently). Weight gain is not a given, though it will happen to some women, but it's no more likely than with the pill.

Good luck!
