Question about Depo-Provera
| Wed, 05-26-2004 - 10:41am |
How soon after going off of Depo-Prevera can you get pregnant? When should your period start back to being normal? Thanks in advance!

How long it takes to regain regular cycles really depends on how long you've been on Depo Provera. Generally, the longer you are on the drug, the longer it will take for your body to recover it's natural function. In fact, there are many women who have been off of Depo for *years* and are STILL having problems trying to concieve; its one of the risks you must recognize when you start getting the shot.
Personally, I tried Depo once (so it was in my body for three months) and I *really* disliked it so I decided not to get another shot once my three months was up. It took me two months to start functioning normally and have regular cycles again. But, that's just me! Every drug you ever put in your body, be it Tylenol or Birth Control of ANY kind, is going to affect you differently than it effects everyone else.

As Jenn said, it will depend on your body chemistry as to how long the aftereffects of Depo will be with you. Some women ovulate the next month, others can take 18 months and sometimes longer to ovulate after stopping Depo. Are you trying TTC or avoid? If you are trying to avoid, you can not rely on Depo to protect you after you miss the window for your next shot. If that is your case be sure to use another effective method of contraception.
Good luck,
Jill
