Male sensitivity to the Nuva Ring???

Hi again :)

One more question today...

My bf and I were discussing bc methods last week before my annual exam (where I wound up with the Ortho Evra patch if you saw my other post). He said that he's had adverse reactions to the Nuva Ring...has anyone else heard of this? Can the guy feel the ring? Is there something in it that would irritate? Just wondering....

I was on the ring for 2 months while with my last boyfriend, and even though he never complained about it, I knew he could sometimes feel it... I could FEEL when he would feel it.

Perhaps I am an exception, as the ring never worked right for me (it kept sliding down no matter what I did), and even though sex pushed it right up where it should be, he still could feel it.

When I went off it, he was like "yeaaaa... I didn't like it so much - I could feel it"

And I have read posts where one girl's bf got a little sore on his penis from where it kept rubbing.

Hi PI Princess, welcome back!

The surface of the ring is round and smooth so there shouldn't be any corners or edges but some partners can feel it. If that is a problem, the ring can be removed for periods of up to 3 hours at a time without reducing its effectiveness. Does that help?

Good luck,

Hi again, dancer!

You are so sweet to remember me.:)

That clears it up, thanks. I wound up with Ortho Evra instead of the IUD or diaphragm because I am allergic to Nonoxnyl-9 and my doctor advised against the IUD because of my quote "small, unstretched uterus."

I really didn't want to go hormonal again, but she said that the problems I had with the pill were less likely with the Ring or Patch and could be reversed more easily if I had a bad reaction. So I wound up with Ortho Evra b/c my SO said he had problems the Nuva Ring before (now I have a better understanding of why). I'm trying the patch, and if it doesn't work for me (I hate wearing something on me all of the time) I may go to the ring and simply remove it to have sex. Either way, I'm determined to find the method for me.

Thanks again for the help.

Wow, thanks, climbinggirl.

That makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. I just thought it was funny that he said he had problems when from everything I had read (manufacturer's product info, mostly) partners weren't supposed to be able to feel the ring.

So, what did you switch to after the Nuva Ring problems?

Well despite the fact that I was adamantly against the pill... I ended up on the pill :-)

Thing is - I was always so hesitant bc my period and my cycle were always fine... sure, some pms, normal. No cramping really. Period was like 5 days. No big deal. But I didn't want side effects etc. I had lots of emotional side effects with the ring, but that was, with all due respect, my first shot at hormonal anything you know? So... anyways.

I switched to cyclessa. It's by the makers of the nuvaring, and it is a triphasic pill. It's been pretty good.

And even though my bf and I just broke up and so I really don't need to be on it anymore - I think I'll still end up staying on it. Sighhhhhhh.

Also I thought I'd keep forgetting to take a pill, but I just set my alarm for the same time each morning and popped the pill right by my bedstand (oh, with a glass of water nearby). :)
