Ok...my first one. I just got my 2nd depo shot on the 11th of May. Now during the 1st 3 months I was getting AF for about 2 weeks, then it would stop for a couple weeks and then show up for 2 more weeks. Well ever since I got my 2nd shot she hasn't shown up at all. Is this supposed to be normal?? I know that irregular periods are something to expect while on this, but what are the odds of AF disappearing after the 2nd shot. I thought it took awhile for the whole thing to stop all together.
2nd question is this...I just put on some antibiotics(I got a wonderful UTI). Anywho....is being on and antibiotic gonna screw up the effectiveness of my shot?? Are we going to have to use a backup method?? I've talked to 2 separate people(a pharmacy tech and the other a registered nurse). Anywho the pharmacy tech says it will mess up the effectiveness and to use a back up method while I'm on my pills. And the nurse says that it won't effect anything. Who am I supposed to believe?? We're gonna use condoms as back up, but for how long do we need to do this?? Until my next shot, a week, for the 3 days I'm on my antibiotics??
Wow...that got long. Thanks for all ya'lls help

It's not unusual for periods to disappear when on Depo. As far as ABs interacting to make Depo-Provera less effective here is what the Depo site and the Eckard Drug Advisor had to say.
From the Depo-Provera site http://www.depoprovera.com/
“DRUG INTERACTIONS
Aminoglutethimide administered concomitantly with the DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection may significantly depress the serum concentrations of medroxyprogesterone acetate. Users of DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection should be warned of the possibility of decreased efficacy with the use of this or any related drugs.”
The Eckard Drug Advisor: http://www2.eckerd.com/content.asp?content=pharmacy%2Fdrugadvisor&cookie%5Ftest=1 says:
“What drug(s) may interact with medroxyprogesterone?
•antibiotics or medicines for infections, especially rifampin, rifabutin, rifapentine, and griseofulvin
•aprepitant, a medicine used for chemotherapy-induced náusea and vomiting
•barbiturate medicines such as phenobarbital, may be used to induce sleep or to treat seizures
•bosentan
•medications for treating seizures (convulsions) such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, or primidone
•modafinil
•St. John's wort
•troglitazone or pioglitazone”
It may be that the interaction is to make the other medicines more or less potent but I wouldn’t take that chance. If I were you I would use back-up while you are on the antibiotics and for at least 7 days afterward. You might want to ask the doctor who prescribed Depo for you what s/he advises.
Good luck
