Spotting-first month with Nuvaring??

Hi, after having 2 kids and being off of birth control for years, I decided to try the Nuvaring to even out my hormones (PMDD), regulate my cycles (anywhere between 30-49 days), and also for the BC factor.

Here's what I did. AF started on a Friday. I called my ob/gyn on Tuesday, day 5 of my cycle, and she gave me a sample and told me to insert it that night. (She said that since I was before the end of my 5th day, I could do it that night, or wait until Sunday. Either way was fine. So, I did it on the 5th day). Af got a little heavier the next day, and instead of stopping on day 7 like it Always has, I kept spotting. I have now been spotting brown blood (which I know is old) since I inserted the ring, which was 14 days ago. SO, I am on day 19 of my cycle and spotting. Is this normal? Is it just a first cycle thing and it will go away next month? A friend who is also using it said her doctor told her to start on Sunday - no other option, and she isn't having the spotting. Did I do something wrong? I am experiencing night sweats and some acne too, but I am pleased otherwise (no nausea like I used to have with BC, no moodswings, can't feel it at all)... Should I wait it out one more cycle or is spotting for this long indicative of an imbalance and I should take it out??

Thanks!

Beth

Hang out hon! ;) This happens often when women start hormonal contraceptives, the hormones aren't necessarily an automatic shutoff for your period and we've had plenty of posts from women who have had the annoying spotting for weeks. It's usually just annoying and nothing more. The good news is that next month should be better, in most cases, breakthrough bleeding is worst in the first month and improves in the second and third months. I had an early period in my first month on the ring, and it got right at the beginning of my ring-free week in the second month, and since the third month, I've been on a really normal and regular schedule with no unusual bleeding or anything.

Give it another month or two before you make any decisions, it's something new for your body to adjust to and once it's done that, you'll know better whether to keep it or try something else.

Good luck! I've been using the ring for a year and a half and I'm really happy with it.

Thanks Judie!

The spotting is really getting on my nerves!!!, but I will give it another month and hopefully, like you said, next month will be better :)

Thanks for responding!

My first cycle w/nuvaring, I had breakthru bleeding the whole month. Then after I had my "real" period I put the new ring in and it was done. Don't worry, give it a little time :-)
