Fertility changes??

Okay, I am supposed to be starting an antibiotic (metrhoidazol) for acne (it was prescribed last Thursday), but I am chickening out due to the interactions it may have with my BCP. My fiance and I plan to use condoms once again (joy!) and probably withdrawal if I do decide to start this antibiotic. (I tend to be a worrier, so I am trying to decide which is more important, clear skin or worry-free months.) Anyhow, I am also trying to detect changes in my cervix throughout the month. I checked twice today, and earlier today my cervix was firm, and tonight before bed my cervix was soft. Is this normal? What should my cervix feel like if my BCP is working?

Thanks and I hope I have not been too confusing!

Hi luvbert,

An infertile cervix should be low and firm. I, like you, am a worrier and tend to keep pretty close tabs on my body, checking for signs of fertility, such as cervical mucous and changes in my cervix throughout the month (it just gives me added peace of mind). I have not yet felt my cervix to be soft while using bcps - it has always been firm. A few points to consider (and, as this board often recommends, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great book to help you learn about this stuff . . .) - the feel of your cerix can also change from other factors, not just fertility. I find that after I've had SI, it also tends to be higher and a little softer. Not to be gross, but it also often feels a bit different after I've (ahem) gone to the bathroom. Also, be careful not to check too compulsively or too often. This can also affect the way the cervix feels AND it can't bee good to be poking at it all the time! The best way to check it is to squat down on the floor, insert your finger, and feel for it that way. According to what I've read, this is the most accurate way for a woman to be sure that what she is feeling is in fact her cervix. If you're on bcps and taking them correctly, you shouldn't experience any of the normal changes a woman who is not on OCs would during her fertile time. Hope this helps . . .

Thanks for the input! I checked again this morning, and it was firm again. Last night when I checked it I had just gone to the bathroom (sorry...tmi!) Anyhow, thanks again!
