Questions about Mirena

After being on Alesse for three months and having turned into a bit of a monster on it (horrible, several-times-a-day shift in mood) and also discovering that those headaches I've been getting every day are actually migraine activity back to haunt me, I've decided to try something else. The doctors have told me that, unfortunately, it's very likely I will have the same mood disturbances and migraine problems on anything that pumps hormones into my body, so I'm pretty much stuck with the IUD.

What they're suggesting is Mirena, which does contain some hormone, but it's so localized that it doesn't actually get into the blood stream apparently?

Basically, I have some hesitation about doing this so I'd like to hear what people have to say about Mirena. One issue in particular that I'm concerned about is the possibility of expelling it. Also, I'd be interested to know if it puts any limitations at all on the...vigorousness with which you can have sex? I just don't want it to be jarred out of place or something.

I had a copper IUD, not Mirena, so I can't say what it is like as far as the hormone part of it goes. Other women on this board have Mirenas, so hopefully they can help you out. With Mirena, some amount of hormone is absorbed into the blood stream, but it is relatively low - not enough to suppress ovulation. The IUD should not affect your ability to have vigorous sex. It fits very snugly inside the uterus and is held in place by its arms (the top part of the 'T'). If your uterus is small or has not been stretched out by carrying a child, the IUD is more likely to be expelled. Expulsion occurs in approximately 5% of women within the first year of use. I loved my IUD until I expelled it. Good luck with your decision.

I've had the MIRENA IUD for about 10 months now and absolutely love it!! It cut down my periods from where I was using a double pack of kotex overnights each month to now using a handful of pantiliners. The periods came every 2 weeks for the first few months after getting the IUD and they were heavier than usual-sometimes lasting 2 weeks or more but that's somwhat of a normal experience. It will end...I basicly spot for a couple of days and it's over.I love it.I don't know the statistics about expelling it-although I know it can happen....My dh can't feel the string during sex-we try lots of positions and we haven't had any problems....My dh is somewhat large and gets very active during sex and I haven't had any problems with that either....You could ask your dr for an information pack or check out the website-
